the principal reminds us-
fine line for haiku

next to the teacher
a can of cold diet coke-
unopened

sound of wood on wood
the chess player turns his head-
a gleam in his eye

through the car window -
friday night teenage spirit
and dance beats booming

holding my daughter's hand
in her fourth birthday dress-
bridal premonition

as the afternoon drifts on
fewer and fewer voices
in the staffroom...
across the globe
my wife sleeps

on the mantle
a glistening swirl of shell-
a fine place for change
